After the publication of our article telling historical facts of Baccarat, in this article we will teach you the basics of this casino game. It has some similarities to Blackjack, one of the most famous games in the world, and maybe that's why it has the adoration of thousands of players. The best known version is called “Punto Banco”, which will be our reference, but there are other variables, called “Chemin de fer” (Chemmy), “Baccarat banque” (à deux tableaux), in addition to “Macao”.

Basic rules

In Baccarat you can place three bets on who will be the winner, before receiving the cards: you, the dealer or a tie.

Unlike Blackjack, where you play "against" the dealer, in this game you have the possibility to bet both in favor of the house and in your own hand.

After the bet is made, the cards are dealt. There are two for the banker and two for the player, alternately. The purpose of the game is for your hand to be worth nine or eight points (called a natural hand). It's quite simple!

Cards value

Cards 2 to 9: are worth their own values.

Ace: has a value of 1.

Ten, Jack, Queen and King: has a value of 0 (zero).

Important: the maximum value that can be reached is 9. In this way, if the sum of the two cards is greater than the limit value, only the last digit is considered.

For example: in 6 + 8 = 14 your hand would be worth 4 (the last digit becomes the value).

Gameplay

As you can see, after the cards are dealt, the purpose is for the sum of the cards to be nine, or in the worst case to be eight (both called a natural hand).

If one has a hand that adds up to nine or eight and the other doesn't, the winner will be the natural hand.

If either of them ends the round with a natural hand, obviously the one with the highest value will win. Nine beats eight.

If the two end the round with an identical hand, it is considered a draw.

What if after dealing the two cards for each, neither has made a natural hand? Hence there are some rules for receiving the third card.

When the player may receive a third card or not

- If the sum of the starting hand is from 0 to 5, you can receive a third card.

- If the sum of the starting hand is 6 or 7, he keeps the hand, without receiving a third card.

At this moment the player doesn't have any more possibilities. In Baccarat a maximum of three cards is allowed, both for the dealer and for the player.

When the dealer may or may not receive a third card

- If the starting hand sum is between 0 and 2, the dealer can be dealt a third card.

- If the sum of the starting hand is 3, he can draw another card (unless the player draws an 8 on his third card).

- If the sum of the starting hand is 4, the dealer can receive a third card only if the value of the player's third card is between 2 and 7.

- If the sum of the dealer's starting hand is 5, he will be entitled to the third card only if the player's third card has the value between 4 and 7.

- If the sum of the starting hand is 6, he can receive a third card only if the player's third card was a 6 or 7.

- If the sum of the starting hand is 7, he keeps the hand, without receiving a third card.

Finally, if the two have received their third cards, the winner of the round will be whoever came close to nine. In case of a tie, the bet is void, you don't lose, but you don't win either.
